Welcome back, loves!
On the day this post goes live (hallelujah for scheduled posts!) Matt and I are heading off to Kos, Greece on our first holiday together and I could not be more excited!
I have been lucky enough to go on lots of holidays abroad since I was one year old, yet flying still terrifies me. I can’t really explain why, other than that I feel a little bit ‘trapped’ and get overly worried about something going wrong during the flight or once I get to my destination. As a result of this, I do anything I can to make myself feel more comfortable and preparation is key. Matt and I went to Dublin for his birthday in March and I held (onto) his hand (for dear life) the entire flight. Oops!
One thing I do like about the travelling experience is packing my bag. I would love to use a pretty beach bag for my carry on but they are just not big enough! Instead, I picked up this Vans x Lazy Oaf backpack and I bloody love it. Let’s just get this out of the way: if you’re looking for a clear, concise ‘just-the-necessities’ idea of what to pack in your carry on bag this is not the post for you – however if you fancy a little snoop at what I’ll be taking with me and maybe a giggle about how much I’m overpacking keep on reading…
Yep, all the boring things people tend to overlook and leave behind. I know this all too well because one year on the way home from Florida my dad left all our of our passports in the villa; we then missed our first flight and connecting flights. From leaving the villa (the first time) to arriving home we travelled for almost 24 hours – good one, dad! To make sure I don’t follow in his forgetful footsteps, I have a little checklist *yawn* of everything I keep in my crossbody bag (sold out): our passports and copy of tickets, phone, phone charger with EU adaptor, portable charger, headphones, my card holder, coin purse (I generally only use my debit card in England – having to use cash abroad is always a bit of a nuisance!), powder, my favourite lipstick in Syrup, lip balm, a pen and my medication.
My Beauty Bag
I know it’s only liquids/gels/creams that must go in a clear bag but I find it’s much easier to keep everything together, and it keeps me from over packing too much. Once we get through security I’ll switch my essential bits in here over to my crossbody. I LOVE this bag I just picked up from Space NK – a recommendation from Lily Pebbles’ Instagram story – and as she said, it’s a great dupe for the Anya Hindmarch in-flight bag (one I’ve swooned over for years but could never justify purchasing!)
Since I can remember I have always packed my makeup in my hand luggage, it’s just not something I would want to get lost or broken. Have you seen how the baggage handlers throw your suitcases around?! For my base I have the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light – it doesn’t sit on the skin and is very breathable, my all time favourite foundation. To cover dark circles and any spots that may appear I packed my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. My Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara is the best for holding a curl and my must have eyebrow product is the Glossier Boy Brow. I have very sparse eyebrows and as I’m still too scared to get HD Brows – I really want to – this works a treat. I also packed my makeup brushes (not pictured) so I’m good to go!
As this is not a long haul flight I have kept my skincare items to a minimum. We fly late afternoon and don’t arrive until almost midnight, so I will more than likely take my makeup off before we land using my Yes to Cucumbers face wipes. I packed a mini of my favourite overnight moisturiser; the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense which will ensure my skin doesn’t feel horrible after being on a flight. Lip balm is my number one beauty product of all time, I packed two; Glossier Balm Dot Com in coconut, and Nivea Hydro Care – Matt will steal this too!
I take my MAC Turquatic rollerball everywhere with me and a flight is no exception. It’s a light scent so is not offensive; planes are very small and while I’d like to smell good, I want to be considerate to those around me. My new night-time holiday scent, Commodity Gold is also packed in here! I love using sprays to refresh my skin; my favourite is the Caudalie Beauty Elixir. Hand sanitizer and hand cream are also a must-have for me – the ones I have are from Bath and Body Works. I somehow forgot about my contact lenses and eye drops – I quickly packed those!
I always take a magazine and a book on flights because it’s one thing I can concentrate on if I feel a little nervous and need a distraction. I buy Cosmopolitan magazine every month and it’s been so hard to not read it yet! I love these sunglasses I picked up last week – they are my first pair from Quay and they definitely won’t be my last. I also packed my Tangle Teezer because I’m 99% sure my hair will end up in a bun on top of my head by the time we get on the plane!
If you read my Fifty Facts About Me post you will know I’m always cold! I take fluffy socks (not pictured) on every flight… definitely not the ~summer vibes~ I was going for but I’d rather be warm and comfy even if it means looking like a bit of a prat. I’ll also take a cosy jacket and more than likely steal Matt’s at some point too… perks of travelling with my boyfriend!
Snacks for the plane are so important. We’ll pick up something a little more substantial in the airport, but of course we had to take Percy Piglets – our favourite sweets! I have a terrible sweet tooth and will grab a chocolate bar in the airport too. (Here’s a little embarrassing secret for you: on a day-to-day basis I always have an emergency chocolate bar in my handbag just incase) so being stuck on a four hour flight without one sounds horrific! Not to be dramatic. Also, chewing gum is a necessity for both of us!
Backup Clothing Items
Yes, you read that right. To add on to the whole scared-of-flying thing, I also have an irrational fear of the airline losing my bag and being stranded wearing I ♥ Kos t shirts and Matt’s swim shorts. So, to make me feel a little more at ease (fully aware this is crazy) I packed a spare day time outfit, a bikini, and a night time outfit. Oh and a spare pair of pants! Apparently I think if my case was to get lost it would be returned to me before breakfast the next day. It would, right? I promise this made sense to me before I wrote it.
I’m pretty sure I’ve got all bases covered (if I haven’t theres something seriously wrong), but I’d love to know if I’m missing any of your must-have in-flight products?!
